Radio Songs is a collection of my original songs, ranging from ones written almost fifteen years ago to ones that I finished up while recording. It also spans a variety of styles including folk, bluegrass, gospel, pop, and rock, (no rap or country, sorry).
This “solo” album sounds as great as it does due to the talented friends of mine who contributed their own colors to the canvas along the way. Below a quick story about the recording for those who are interested.
It was either Kerry or Kate (or maybe both) who finally said to me a couple of years ago over a couple of beers at Center Street, “You have to stop talking about this album and just do it.” But where to start? Well, I figured Rick Redington might have some ideas, since he had just put out another CD, (www.rickredington.com). Rick and I chatted and he brought me down to formally meet with Rod Ferrell and check out Mt. Hollywood Studios.
For the first session I dragged in some friends, Tara, Ashlee, and Meghann Canio-Bela, along with Meghann’s husband Rene and their daughter Aisha, as well as Ashlee’s son Ernie. While Rick helped baby-sit, we pulled off a few takes of a traditional song, Rollin’ in my Sweet Babies Arms, which you’ll here at the end of the album. It was a fun way to start the project.
Chad Hollister dropped in for the next session, laying down first-take after first-take on the congas. Near the end of the session Rick jumped in on bass and we recorded Blah live (first-take) and Rick and Chad played together on Mexico. It was a lot of fun and a big ego boost to have those guys come in and put in the time on my CD. They have both been very kind and supportive of me from the get-go, which I appreciate.
The next big session was the Dirty Pick band recordings. The morning of the session I pulled something in my shoulder putting my coat on, (must be getting old). But as they say, “The show must go on”. Seven of us rolled into Mount Hollywood on a snowy March day to record. We recorded three songs live, with seven people fanned out across the studio. Enough and Smokin’ in the Rain made it on the album.
(more to come)
